As promised, here are the much anticipated results of LITplease's Perfectly Packaged Fantasy Contest!

1ST PLACE:

Return to the Forest           The forests of Amorelle had always been something marvelous to behold, cradled in a large valley and surrounded by white-capped mountains.
Alongside the more common oak, maple, and evergreen trees, violet-leaved sugar snappers rose up to eighty feet in the air, towering above the forest. And it was in those trees that the Fleuri made their lives.
The trees grew in monstrous groves, filtering sunlight to shades of purple and illuminating the Fleuri tribes. They lived in simple tree-huts, living their peaceful lives without getting in anyone's way.
But then the humans came, bringing death and slavery to my people. Spreading disease and suffering wherever their savage eyes glared and their deadly bodies roamed.

2ND PLACE:

Everlasting SmileLying deep within a stunted, far-reaching forest was a valley whose name was rarely spoken aloud. This valley of darkness, shadowed by thick-hanging mist, was traversed only by those foolish enough to think they could pass through unscathed. Few ventured into the cold, curling mist, and none of those ever made it out at either end. They were lost in the fog, doomed to forever wander in search of freedom they would never again taste. That is why the valley was named The Damned Valley. But only those who planned to conquer the valley dared speak its name. To other, saner people it was simply – There.
In the corner of a crowded, busy tavern in a backwater village that no one remembered, I sat at the table and watched the drunkards down their ale. Echoes of laughter at bad jokes and discussions on the verge of turning sour filled the small room. I swept my gaze across the assortment of people, looking for just one in the sea of heads. When I spotted it, I allowed a smile to grace my f

HONOURABLE MENTION:

Every End is a New BeginningOn a bench on the top floor of the East Tower, one of the stone anchors of the royal palace, the youngest daughter of the Empress sat with her elbows and chin resting on the window sill next to her, her grey eyes surveying her home. Outside her window was the gleaming white city of hundreds, closed in by a white wall. Outside, farmland and orchards to feed the city were surrounded by a double wall of shining white stone which rose sheer from the depths of the lake. The only gate in and out of the city led to a massive bridge of arches stretching out over the mirrored surface of the Silver Mere to the distant eastern shore. It was the only access by land to the Bridge City, if one did not want to take a boat.
Having spent her childhood being taught the history of the empire she belonged to, Riley knew that her home had been built to be completely impenetrable; any approaching army would be seen miles away, and the city could be sealed at a moment's notice. It had been coaxed from the bo

Congratulations to the winners and thank you everyone who submitted an entry for the Perfectly Packaged Fantasy Contest. We hope LITplease's next contest will be as big a success as this one!

ORIGINAL NEWS ARTICLE

LITplease is at it again!

The genre of fantasy is a popular one--in fact, it's so popular that, along with science fiction, it was voted in LITplease:'s recent polls as our members' favorite genre to both READ and WRITE!

So, we thought it was time we brought you a FANTASY WRITING CONTEST!

There's only one problem--fantasy generally involves huge settings with a plethora of characters and stories that span years or even decades. That's great when you're picking up a new volume at the bookstore but not so great when you're a poor volunteer deviant trying to judge a contest. We don't have that kind of time!

So, for this contest you're being asked to write a short story of no more than 3000 words that centers around one major event in the main characters life. We as judges want to get the sense that this is just one point in time in that characters vast life, whether it be just the beginning or the very end or somewhere in between, but at the same time it must be a stand-alone piece. That means you cannot submit a chapter or otherwise incomplete story. In other words--no cliffhangers! We want pieces that are perfectly packaged for the holidays.

RULES

1) Your deviation must be a new story submitted after today's date, though you may use an existing character from your literature arsenal.
2) You may not submit a chapter, exerpt, preface, or other part of a larger whole--it must be a complete stand alone piece.
3) The story must center around one major event in the main characters life spanning no more than one year, however providing character background is allowed and in fact encouraged.
4) Your execution of story and character should leave us with the impression there is a larger story without the use of a cliffhanger.
5) Your story must be 3000 words or less.
6) Your deviation must be in the contest folder by January 8th at 10pm EST.
7) There must be a line in the comments section of the deviation indicating the piece was written for this contest, preferably with a link.
8) You must be a member of LITplease to submit, but you do not have to remain a member to win the contest. There are no strings here.
